Chapter fourteen

Ruby

I try not to panic at the fact that I’m entirely and utterly alone. We don’t even know what planet we are on. I’m alone and pregnant out there somewhere in the universe, locked in a fucking zoo. I have to get Jacx back. They took him away, presumably to punish him. I hope they don’t hurt him. I look around at my neighbors in their enclosures. None of them have scars from being lashed, or anything crazy. I don’t get the impression that anyone here is mistreated; I’ve never seen anyone hurt by the zookeepers. Heck, on Earth, animals that aren't well cared for means the zoos eventually get shut down. People do not tolerate animal cruelty. Does the same rule apply here? Hopefully.

I lay under my usual hiding spot, the covers. But I start having crazy thoughts, except they aren’t technically crazy. More specifically, I remember an orangutan at the zoo. He kept escaping and it was a problem for his caretakers. So eventually, they relocated him to another zoo. At that thought, fear rips through me. That’s why they separated us. The Madam is going to get rid of Jacx. I’ll never see him again. I won’t even have a way to contact him if I managed to escape on my own. Which I know is impossible. I would never see Jacx again and the thought is horrifying. He's the only chance I have to escape. I place a protective hand on my belly. All of us, unborn baby included, are nothing more than property to the Madam. All she cares about is getting her money's worth out of us. If we were cattle, she wouldn't care if we were turned into hamburgers, as long as she turned a profit. I have to get us out of here ASAP.

Jacx

I sit in my new enclosure, worrying myself sick over my mate. I worry about her wellbeing. Is she ok? Are they still feeding her? Did she get punished? Is my unborn child alright? My mind swirls with so many questions. I look out of the glass walls, seeing my new neighbors. They all appear to be aquatic creatures of sorts, with pools of water inside of their enclosures. That answers my question of why this enclosure was empty, there isn’t a tank for water in here.

I start to get a migraine, and quickly lay down with dizziness. I’ve never had a migraine before. I’ve heard of the symptoms—sensitivity to light and sound. I take deep breaths, trying to gain my bearings. A strange sensation envelopes my mind. Hello? I hear a voice echo in my mind. I suddenly panic. Am I suffering from mental illness? I hear a laugh in my mind, that is also not my own. It vibrates off my eardrums.

You are not suffering from mental illness. Relax Jacx. It’s me, your reptilian neighbor. My name is Kalix.

Are you truly speaking to me? In my mind?

Yes. I’ve been sending you mental feelers since you’ve arrived. I think some of the communications have sunk it.
